The title sounds pretty dramatic...and this post is going to be a little off-topic. But I was out walking the dogs tonight and realized that TV is to blame for a lot of societies problems. Ok, it's not really TV's fault, it's always the human interaction with the tv, but I'll blame tv nonetheless.
A woman on my block was robbed at gunpoint yesterday. It happened over the lunch hour. In broad daylight. She was held up, and her purse was stolen. It's one of many crimes that has happened in the metro in recent weeks.
As I was walking the dogs tonight I was looking at my neighborhood with all its shritwaist houses. I walked for blocks -- on a beautifl 75 degree evening. There wasn't a sole on their front porch. Everyone was either not at home, or inside, probably watching television.
50 years ago, on a perfect fall evening in my neighborhood, people would have been out on their front porches enjoying the evening, talking with neighbors, having a glass of wine. Now, no one is outside any more. They're inside, watching TV. Without so many people around, the streets aren't as safe to walk on, because someone can assault you, and no one is around to watch it -- even in broad daylight. Crime now is easy. It didn't used to be that way. I sometimes wish we'd get back to the olden times when people watched less TV, and spent more time on their front porches. We'd all be friendlier, and crime would be much harder.
