As promised, I'm continuing with my updates on what is going on at KC Pet Project here in Kansas City.
For those of you who are not aware, KCPP is a fairly new organization that was formed to take over the city contract on the Kansas City, MO animal shelter. We began operations at the shelter on January 1.
The shelter itself has long been a high-kill shelter, (with kill rates as high as 65% as recently as 2008) although under separate private management, had a 65% save rate the past 2 years.
We took over the city contract with the goal of moving the open admission, public shelter into being a no kill shelter.
In August, we had a total intake of dogs and cats of 613 -- which is high for a shelter with a max capacity of about 200-250 animals.
Of those, we had 324 adoptions, 191 transferred to other rescue groups, and 87 returned to owners -- for a total of 602 total positive outcomes. The 324 adoptions and 602 positive outcomes are both records for us as an organization.
We also lowered our total shelter/foster population by 99 animals -- which was huge for us during such a high intake month.
This, in total, gave us a total live release rate of 91% for the month of August, following a 91% live release rate in July.
For the year, we've now had 1,848 adoptions, 646 RTOs, and 1,174 transferred to other shelters and rescue groups -- for a total of 3,668 positive outcomes. This is more than 1000 more positive outcomes than in the first 8 months of last year. Our save rate on the year is just under 84%.
We've been blessed to have developed a great staff, a great (and growing volunteer base) and an outstanding group of rescue groups that are helping make our success possible.
We still feel like we have a ways to go as it hardly feels sustainable at this point, but we are making progress, and I'm really proud of our team at the shelter who are working their butts off every day to make this happen.
WAY TO GO! THIS IS SO SO SO SO SO EXCITING! SOME SAID IT COULD NOT BE DONE! YOU ARE SHOWING THEM THEY ARE WRONG!

Is that 324 adoptions just for August? Wow. Good job all.

Excellent work, KC Pet Project. What a turnaround for Kansas City dogs and cats. Kudos to all the volunteers that made it happen.

Great job KC Pet Project! The staff and volunteers are working so hard to achieve these results.
I dare say KC, Missouri has the most challenging shelter in the metro area; old outdated, small building, horrible location, the highest intake, and a regressive Animal Control department.
There really is light at the end of the tunnel.
