The +1 is my opportunity to highlight one post from the month that I wish had made the top 5, but didn't.
1) Dog bite fatalities final report -- always the most read of the year as people seek to cut through the artificial hysteria created by others.
2) How to Build a Dog -- this little story about an article in about DNA and genetic differences in dog breeds came in at #2
3) Keeping animals out of shelters - a new law in Kansas City codifies a free ride home for dogs with licenses - -as well as all licensing fees going to fund shelter operations -- a possible opportunity to increase Return to Owners and keeping animals out of the shelter in the first place.
4) New Research Paper - Dog Bite Prevention: An Assessment of Child Knowledge -- a good start on studying what children know about dog bite prevention and where we can help guide them.
5) 2011 Year in Review -- a review of good, bad and ugly of the year that was

Kansas City numbers improving, still a ways to go -- a look at the improvements in shelter killing with the Kansas City, MO animal shelter over the past 6 years as our new organization took over full shelter operations on January 1. I think KC in many ways reflects the difficulties that many other cities face in minimizing the killing -- and yet, are making good progress with more still to come.
