Earlier this week, I posted about the nearly overnight success that the Upper Penninsula Animal Welfare Shelter saw upon making the decision to pursue no kill initiatives to decrease (and end) the killing in their shelter. While some animals still need to be euthanized due to behavior or health reasons, none is killed for space.
YesBiscuit! has four people's stories from UPAWS. They were there during the transformation of the shelter - and each of them has their own point of view on the transformation. But for all of them it was an extremely positive experience.
It appears that there are a small number of outsiders who want to claim that No Kill cannot happen -- or that it is somehow, secretly, a horrible situation for the animals. And yet, when you hear testimonials like these, or from advocates like Valerie Hayes, you realize that for the people involved, it is a wonderful feeling not having to kill animals on a daily basis because the shelter is "full".
Go, read their stories. See the transformation. And realize it can be done. There are too many happy endings to be had for it not to.
