Yesterday, the city council in Sioux City discussed the possibility of repealing the city's breed ban - -and instead, moving to an ordinance that that just required restrictions on 'pit bull' type dogs -- including mandatory microchipping and muzzling.
"But I'm just saying, I think the system is broken. I think we do need to fix it because I think that the things that are happening right now aren't consistent and I think there are some things that were not done well," says Aaron Rochester, Sioux City City Council."
In all honesty, the current "solution" is still based on the broken model that is causing the problems in the first place. And the problems in Sioux City have been numerous -- including breed identification issues, forced signing of paperwork that violated due process and a civil suit against the city.
Acknowledging that the ordinance is failing is a good first step. Coming up with a workable solution is at least now possible. Hopefully the council and the mayor will listen the the people in the rescue and veterinary communities in Sioux City and come to a workable solution.
