The Star has some nice video footage of SNKC's ribbon cutting ceremony on their new location.
Kansas City is lucky to have three or four great facilities for low cost spay/neuters in the city, with SNKC being one of them. Meanwhile, as Michelle Dormandy notes in the video, in the KC area, we are still killing around 15,000-20,000 animals each year.
While the Kansas City area has a lot of great spay/neuter facilities, and a lot of great rescues, many of our problems are coming from just a small handful of city-run shelters (KCMO's shelter, before undergoing private management was killing 7,000 of these animals)that have made virtually no effort to save the lives of animals or to get lost animals back home (we have a couple of shelters who still don't even routinely scan for microchips).
This, combined with laws that are increasing the ability of animal control departments to confiscate animals from homes they're already in, and that make adopting certain breeds of dogs into certain cities impossible due to breed bans and laws that make responsibly caring for feral cat colonies illegal are making SNKC's goal of limiting the number of animals killed in this city very difficult.
But hats off to SNKC for the good work they do and the new facility. We're working on the other parts....really.
