Watching Gustav

  I've been watching a lot of Hurricane Gustav this morning. Like so many in this country I'm watching with anxiousness as the hurricane approaches. The city of New Orleans, and many of the other cities in southern Louisiana have already suffered so much disaster, it would be very difficult for them to have to completely rebuild -- again -- so quickly even as the other rebuilding efforts remain uncomplete.

The good news is that we look like we're learned some lessons from the tragedies that surrounded Hurricane Katrina. The majority of the people did indeed evacuate this time around. And most were able to do so with their pets in tow.  After Hurricane Katrina, thousands of pets were abandoned in the city for weeks. Rescue groups were unorganized and unprepared -- although were able to do an amazing job of making things up on the fly. 

Watching the hurricane come in brings back a ton of memories...and prompted me to read through my diary of the week we spent in New Orleans that Michelle and I put together following Katrina and during the middle of Hurricane Rita. 

Hopefully the effects of the Hurricane will not be as catestrophic as when Hurricane Katrina hit 3 years ago. But if it is, it is nice to know that many of the lessons learned will save thousands of human and animal lives.  Best of luck folks.

Haven't had a chance to research this, but can people take their pets in the mandatory evacuation?
That's what caused the animal horror last time, having to leave pets behind to be target practice for gun-happy a$$holes with badges, or to drown, or starve.
