Today, Wednesday, May 9, marks the 2 year anniversary of Denver re-instituting its pit bull ban. I'm not into candlelight vigils, but I think it's important to read a note from Sonya Dias below. Sonya is leading the way in the third lawsuite against Denver in the past 2 years. Lawsuites, thousands of families having their dogs taken from them, without due process, based only on what the dog looks like and not on its personality or actual danger to society. Seems like a great use of taxpayer resources.
From Sonya:
Wednesday, May 9, 2007 is the two-year anniversary of Denver re-enacting their breed ban. 1400 dogs have been killed because of what they look like. Some of these dogs have been all kinds of different breeds other than the three breeds commonly called "pit bulls." I've walked down "Pit Row," (essentially "Death Row") at the Denver Municipal Animal Shelter and I've seen Boxers, American Bulldogs, and all kinds of other breeds awaiting their fate as "pit bulls." It is truly heart-wrenching.
Please, if you will, light a candle and take a moment of silence throughout the day to honor the dogs that have been killed and the families that have been hurt by losing their four-legged family members. And, in whatever way is yours, please pray that all the actions that all these wonderful people are taking across North America to end this madness are successful whether they be court action, or lobbying legislators like in Massachusetts, or rescue efforts, or just for our dogs being great ambassadors for dogdom. And scratch your dogs behind the ears and be thankful that they are safe. Thank you so much for your caring and support of Denver dogs and their owners.
Thanks for the reminder. I think.
