Welcome to my new Sunday Weekly Roundup. There have been a lot of interesting news stories that I've been missing during the week. Some of them I just don't get to. Some of them are interesting, but really don't warrant a lot of my commentary. But I think they are things readers would be interested in. Also, this will give me an opportunity to pimp events that are coming up i in the following week. So, here's the first edition of the Sunday Weekly Roundup.
Weird story as a show dog ends up attacking a 70 year old woman. Turns out her foot was amputated. There's a great quote here though that makes you realize how important perception is:
"It's an odd occurance," said Brevard County Animal Shelter spokesman Bob Brown. "This breed is not known for its propensity to bite". Not that I want to condem any breed to what pit bulls have had to endure because like any dog, they are what people train them to be, but I do want to point out that Akita's were used in Japan at hunting bears and are also commonly used in dog fighting. This guy should know that. Perception is everything.
I love the quote: "I'll be honest with you, I'm more afraid of cats than dogs," said SPCA branch manager Penny Stone. "Cats are fast and sneaky. A dog always tells you what it's going to do but a cat doesn't."
A Picture is worth a thousand words
A little girl is "attacked" by a "dangerous" Rottweiler in the UK this week. The mum's quote "It was horrible, the dog could have savaged her and gone for the face or anything. It was so big and powerful, there was no way I could have done anything." The mum is now calling for Rottweiler's to be muzzled in public. The little girl's picture shows a pretty bad bruise, but there don't even appear to be any puncture wounds.
Boy attacked by a Pit Bull in Lexington, NE
This looks like a horrible attack. Note that one of the dog's two owners is in jail (so it gives you some hint that this just might be an owner issue). The council seems to be fairly rational from the quotes in the story and want to look at what other area cities are doing with their dangerous dog ordinances, which most are really bad. Which is why it irritates me when I show up to another city to fight BSL and they ask why I care what goes on in their city. BSL is a cancer, and can spread very quickly.
Bull Mastiff and Labrador kill Pomeranian
This is why dogs need to have "adequate fencing". If they escape, it's not adequate.
Cedar Rapids, IA Considers Pit Bull Ban
But check out the story, sounds like there are stray dogs wandering around everywhere in this neighborhood that is even described by one of its residents as "not the greatest neighborhood in the world." When cities can't enforce their basic leash laws, it seems like more animal control is in order, not more laws that they can't enforce.
No More Homeless Pets KC has Yappy Hour
Scheduled for April 5 from 6-8 -- will post the location here once I can figure out where it'll be.
Keep an eye on the news and let me know if you see a story of a little girl bitten at Loose Park today. I was there and while the family was in hysterics, the girl was playing and not at all upset. The mother insisted on an ambulance to take her to the hospital and after that the news showed up. (the bite was not at all visible from where I sat) My curiosity is how the news will spin it. I got the 'dangerous dog bites innocent kid' vibe from watching. The dog was properly leashed, but I didn't see the actual incident. It looked like some sort of mix, with a brindle coat. I wonder if they will call it a pit bull.
