2006 was a rough year for Kansas City dog lovers. Two major dog attacks and several hundred newspaper stories, TV news stories, etc led to almost every city in the metropolitan area to re-examine their dog ordinances this year.
According to a developer friend of mine, Kansas City has more individual town governments per capita than any other city in the United States -- and after this summer, I believe it.
Fortunately most of the cities in the metro area have taken the time to look at all the facts, and talk to experts and have decided against BSL and instead, instituted anti-tethering, tougher dangerous dog ordinances, etc. We've had good success....and for the most part, the citizens of Kansas City are better off for it.
I, however, am tired.
As we wrap up 2006, I will spend some time in the coming weeks wrapping up actual statistics from 2006 (as I can get them, they're harder to get than one would think) -- and include statistics about how many news articles have run covering the same five or six events this year.
And, as we look toward 2007, I will, as always, continue to address events around the country, around the world, and in Kansas City. I know that my friends over at KC Dog Advocates are planning on working with some of the cities that hastily passed bad ordinances on getting some things over-turned -- and will also be using our voice to hopefully affect the upcoming elections in Kansas City. More to come on that as well.
Here's to a 2007 that will be safe for all of Kansas City's citizens, and full of responsible dog owners who enjoy the companionship provided by our four-legged friends, while taking the full responsibility of what that ownership entails.
Have a great year.
