Earlier this week, the government announced it was "shutting down" until further notice while they work through their egos differences in opinion that are leading to an unbalanced budget. In addition to the many people who's jobs (and livelihoods) have been put on hold while Congress is at a stalemate, the government has decided to shut down it's national parks. In spite of what I think about the government making an attempt to shut down mother nature, alas, I'm not sure then potential $150 ticket is worth the protest -- especially when there are a lot of other great options.
The have a great list, and I wouldn'd disuade anyone from anything on their list.
But I'll add to the list.
The entire Upper Buffalo Wilderness is open -- which means the Boen Gulf access and the hike to
Magnolia Falls. There may not be much water this time of year, but the scenery is no doubt still beautiful.
Arkansas boasts a fantastic state parks system. All of the state parks are open, including
Withrow Springs,
Mount Nebo, Petit Jean and all of the other great parks.
The Rut has begun in the Boxley Valley, which is the can't miss event of the year.
When you're finished enjoying the outdoors, wrap up with a little dinner at the
Low Gap Cafe. They have a great new outdoor patio with a great view to go along with their typically outstanding food.
I'm still trying to get confirmation on the the National Forest Service Lands and whether or not those trails are open, but, needless to say there are still a lot of great options. The weather is great. The leaves will be turning in a few weeks and there is never a better time to get out and enjoy this fall weather. Don't let the feds keep you down.
