Ripple Glass recycling bins are going to begin going in on Monday throughout the metro. Ripple Glass is a private enterprise created by the folks at Boulevard Brewing company that will help Kansas Citians recycle glass.
They estimate that last year, some 10 million empty Boulevard bottles ended up in in area landfills -- and in total, about 150 million pounds of glass were dumped and buried in our landfills.
It is currently estimated that only about 5% of the glass containers used in Kansas City are recycled -- whereas the average rate in the US is nearly 30%.
Ripple Glass will make much easier for people to recycle than the two current locations across the city to recycle glass that have limited working hours.
The glass will not only be recycled, but will be used to make insulation. Meanwhile, hopefully as more people use the service, it will ease some burden on our trash collection services that haul millions of pounds of trash each week.
Hurray for private enterprise.
