Last week, Forbes.com posted an article about the top College Sports towns. Communities were rated on performance in all sports based on the NCAA Director's Cup, low crime rates, average salaries, quality arts and entertainment options, good public schoos and affordable housing.
Based on Forbes' calculations, Columbia, MO weighed in at number 8 on their list -- behind other great traditional college towns like Ann Arbor, Madison, WI, Lexington, KY and Palo Alto, CA.
I'm sure people here locally will howl at the designation. Certainly the alma maters of many Kansas Citians are in fantastic college towns. Even as a Missouri guy, I really like places Lawrence, Manhattan, Lincoln and Norman. I think they're all great college towns in their own right. Given how these statistics were compiled, I'm not surprised that Columbia topped other local college towns.
Kansas City is very lucky to be so close to so many great universities and college towns. They provide a great source of entertainment on Saturday afternoons, fun places to visit on weekends, and a good source of well-educated talent to attract to our community. Which is a win for all of the local businesses that need young, energetic, enthusiastic talent.
WTF does "quality arts" or "affordable trailers" have to do with being a great college SPORTS town? Oh well, congrats MU!
